View of house

This is a retirement home for Mr. and Mrs. Shimmin. They had moved from Chicago and asked me to merge the Loft form to a country house. Their site has a great view of the Colleton River. There is an existing Guest House on the property which I did not design. This 3,200 sf house is a one bedroom home. That bedroom is on the ground level with the living areas and kitchen in one open room on the second level. There is also a small study and deck in the roof on the view. The exterior of the house from the front is supposed to appear as a traditional one story house. However, this is an illusion as the base course of brick is just a facing. The entry formal entry is between the first and second floors. The front windows are mostly false with bahama shutters. The last piece is the very large, 12" beaded Cypress siding which being a little oversized also helps in this trick of scale.

Once inside the house, you will see that the house is closed to the street and totally open to the river. This gives Mrs. Shimmin walls on which to hang her wonderful art collection.
